Preserving Heritage • Building Community • Inspiring Future
Shree Damania Machhi Mahajan Leicester UK is a registered charity organization (Charity No. 1139178) dedicated to serving the Machhi community in Leicester. Since our establishment in 2003, we have been a pillar of support, cultural preservation, and community empowerment for families of Daman origin living in the United Kingdom.
The Machhi community has a rich heritage rooted in the coastal regions of Gujarat and Daman, India. The word "Machhi" translates to "fish," reflecting our ancestral connection to fishing and maritime traditions that have been passed down through generations. Our forefathers were skilled fishermen and navigators who contributed significantly to the coastal economy and culture of western India.
The journey from Daman to Leicester represents decades of resilience, adaptation, and determination. Like many Indian diaspora communities, our members sought new opportunities in the United Kingdom while maintaining strong bonds with our cultural identity and values. Leicester, known for its diversity and welcoming spirit, became home to our community in the early 2000s.
Leicester has become one of the most diverse and welcoming cities in the United Kingdom
Leicester's rich multicultural landscape has made it home to thriving Indian communities since the 1960s
A strong network of Indian organizations and temples that support cultural preservation
Thriving business opportunities and employment prospects for our community members
Quality schools and universities providing excellent education for our children
Today, Shree Damania Machhi Mahajan serves as a vibrant hub for our community in Leicester. We have evolved from a small group of families into a registered charity with over 500 active members, maintaining our cultural identity while fully embracing life in the United Kingdom.
Our community hall at 103 Frisby Road, Leicester, serves as the heart of our activities. It is a space where generations come together—where grandparents share stories of Daman with British-born grandchildren, where traditional festivals are celebrated with enthusiasm, and where members find support during life's challenges.
The principles that guide everything we do
We believe in the strength of community. By supporting each other through celebrations and challenges, we create bonds that transcend generations and geography.
Preserving and celebrating our Daman heritage is central to our identity. We ensure that our traditions, language, and customs are passed to future generations.
We prioritize education as the key to success. Through scholarships, tutoring, and mentorship, we empower our youth to achieve their full potential.
Helping those in need is a sacred responsibility. Our welfare programs ensure no community member faces hardship alone.
We treat every member with respect regardless of age, gender, or background. Dignity and equality are fundamental to our community.
While honoring our heritage, we embrace British values and contribute positively to Leicester's diverse multicultural society.
Dedicated volunteers working tirelessly for our community's welfare
Our Mahajan is governed by a dedicated board of 4 trustees who volunteer their time and expertise to ensure the organization operates transparently and effectively. These community leaders bring diverse skills and experiences, guiding our strategic direction while staying true to our charitable objectives.
Supported by 15 active volunteers, our leadership team organizes events, manages welfare programs, coordinates educational initiatives, and ensures that every member feels valued and supported. Their commitment exemplifies the spirit of selfless service that defines our community.
Whether you're a long-time member or discovering us for the first time, Shree Damania Machhi Mahajan welcomes you with open arms. Join us in preserving our heritage, supporting our community, and building a brighter future for generations to come.
